AVCCC resident, Roger Mc Comb with girlfriend, Margie Hale at the AVCCC annual Thanksgiving luncheon for residents, family and friends. “The care at the Center is wonderful. The love, compassion and kindness is real, honest and sincere. All of the caregivers and members of the staff reveal their compassion for the residents not only through words, but through their actions. I have seen a GREAT improvement in the 2 years that Roger has been here. He experienced a stroke and yet now he can do almost everything. The only reason he is not going home is because he has vision problems that hinder his mobility. I visit Roger every day and I stay for hours to visit with him, and I can tell you that I have never seen such consistently loving care and attention for not only Roger, but for all of the residents here. God’s work is being done here through the loving kindness of those who work here. There is not only love, but healing, a positive attitude and excellent professional care. God Bless all of the folks who work here and who are blessed to be residents at this Center. “ - Margie Hale |
Mr. Lackey – A Rehabilitation Success Story: When Mr. Blaine Lackey came into the Apple Valley Christian Care Center he was unable to speak and was bed ridden after a massive stroke. On the 27th day at the Center he was approaching his one month trial period for rehabilitation. Up until this point all that the rehabilitation staff was able to see was a blank stare from Mr. Lackey. The rehabilitation staff had a meeting with Mr. Lackey to let him know that he was not progressing with therapy and that they were going to remove him from receiving any additional rehabilitative therapy. At that time, one of the therapists called him William (his first name, although he preferred to be called by his middle name which is Blaine). At that time, Mr. Lackey spoke for the first time and said, “Don’t call me William!” That was the turning point. The staff continued to keep Mr. Lackey in rehabilitation and work with him. Eventually, Mr. Lackey was able to walk, had completely recovered his speaking ability and use of his arms, and even became president of the resident council here at the Center. |

One of 80 volunteers at the Center, Mike Boruff calls Bingo for the residents several times a week and loves to dress up as Santa every year to hand out gifts to the residents. Mike has been a fun volunteer at the Center for over 7 years! “I started volunteering at several organizations years ago because I had time on my hands and part of my faith is to exhibit my belief through serving others. The only place that I have continued to volunteer is here at the Apple Valley Christian Care Center. I keep coming back here because of the Center’s mission and because I have a relationship with great people here, not only the residents but also the staff. I have learned great patience by volunteering here with the elderly and the medically fragile residents. The one thing that I value most about this Center and why I support it with my time is because there actually is care here. I have seen it on a daily basis. People who work here spend time with the residents and deeply care about their well-being and make sure that everyone is compassionately cared for. It makes volunteering so much more impactful and meaningful. I will probably be here for years and years to come…for as long as I have something to share.” – Mike Boruff |
